Description
Action And Clinical Pharmacology: Combination oral contraceptives act by suppression of gonadotropins. Although the primary mechanism of this action is inhibition of ovulation, other alterations include changes in the cervical mucus (which increase the difficulty of sperm entry into the uterus) and the endometrium (which reduce the likelihood of implantation). Desogestrel, the progestogen component of Marvelon, displays low androgenic activity in relation to its progestogenic effects and may increase the HDL/LDL ratio and apoprotein A-1/B ratio without affecting HDL2. Like other oral contraceptives, these changes in lipid profile can be associated with an increase in triglycerides. Indications And Clinical Uses: Conception control. Contra-Indications: History of/or actual thrombophlebitis or thromboembolic disorders. History of/or actual cerebrovascular disorders. History of/or actual myocardial infarction or coronary arterial disease. Active liver disease or history of/or actual benign or malignant liver tumors. Known or suspected carcinoma of the breast. Known or suspected estrogen-dependent neoplasia. Undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding. Any ocular lesion arising from ophthalmic vascular disease, such as partial or complete loss of vision or defect in visual fields. When pregnancy is suspected or diagnosed.
